This once in a lifetime experience driving the classic Route 66.

We strongly believe that any holiday should be a fun and relaxing experience, what better way is there to spend your holiday time than driving this iconic route. The itinerary that we have put together is only an outline of the route you could do, so if the driving distances seem a little long, we can add additional nights, up to a maximum of 90 days.

Route Map.

Day 1 Chicago

Departing from the UK on your flight with British Airways direct to Chicago.

The starting point for your self drive tour is the windy city, Chicago.

Picking up your car from the airport and start your adventure.

Enjoy a dazzling music, light and water show at Buckingham Fountain, which is one of the largest fountains in the world.

Hotel - Essex Inn.

Day 2 Chicago.

Chicago Skyline.

After a good nights rest, it’s time to explore Chicago as you wonder down the magnificent mile taking time to see some very impressive architecture.

A must for Chicago is to dine at Lou Mitchell’s, this diner has been going for more than 80 years and is famous for it’s all day breakfast, it’s an easy walk from Union Station. Please note - Lou’s closes early so don’t miss out!

See the Sears Tower, Chicago’s tallest building and one that dominates the city skyline. Maybe take a boat cruise on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. As the sunsets why not have dinner in one of the many Chicago blues clubs

Hotel - Essex Inn

Day 3 Chicago - St. Louis (300 miles)

Begin your journey heading west through the farmlands of Illinois.

Here’s just an example of some of the things you can do on the way to St Louis :

Stop at Joliet for a journey through time and space, take a virtual ride on a trolley and land on the moon, incredible

Stop at Willington and have a photo with the Muffler Man, try a burger at the Launching pad drive in.

Another food stop at the polk-a-dot drive in, great food and a massive display of route 66 memorabilia.

Springfield is home to the cozy dog and the cozy dog drive in, you must taste it, to believe it. This diner has been on Route 66 since 1949.

Auburn, where there is just over a mile of hand laid brick road which was done in 1931

Check out the world’s largest Catsup Bottle at Collinsville

See the Fifth Bridge to be built over the mighty Mississippi at Edwardsville

Who won’t want to see Henry’s Ra66it Ranch as quirky gift shop that is everything rabbit.

Lastly, Doc’s Soda Fountain, great for an ice cream treat.

St. Louis is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River and welcomes you with its famous Gateway Arch.

Hotel - Omni Majestic

Day 4 St. Louis

Arch at St Louis.

St. Louis has always been considered the gateway to the West. It hosted the first  Olympic Games in the United States back in 1904. St Louis was also the city that Charles Lindbergh embarked on the first transatlantic flight.

Hotel - Omni Majestic

Day 5 St. Louis - Springfield (220 miles)

For today’s drive you will pass through the scenic countryside of Missouri, which was the home of Mark Twain. Along the way make time to stop at the Meramec Caverns, this cave system covers 26 miles and is well worth a visit.

Hotel - Candlewood Suite.

Day 6 Springfield - Tulsa (230 miles)

Welcome to the state of Oklahoma. Oklahoma was the promised land for many slaves who headed North looking for a better live, it was also a main frontier state and because of this, the western and Native American way of life is well covered at the Gilcrease Museum. Oklahoma now has more Native American tribal headquarters than any other state.

Hotel - Comfort Inn.

Day 7 Tulsa - Oklahoma City (120 miles)

Todays drive is going to take you to Oklahoma City, but before you arrive why not stop at the Will Rogers (voted top male film star in 1933,34 and 35) Museum in Claremore. Oklahoma City is full of museums and art galleries, but if that’s not your thing head to the Botanical Gardens and the tropical conservatory

Hotel - Best Western Plus.

Day 8 Oklahoma City - Amarillo (288 miles)

Carry on along the Mother Road, once again take a stop in El Reno to see Fort Reno. The fort was built to help protect the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians back in 1874. A highlight for today’s drive is a stop at the Route 66 museum where you can see vintage cars and a whole host of Route 66 memorabilia.

Hotel - Comfort Inn.

Day 9 Amarillo - Tucumcari (109 miles)

Which way now?

As you leave Anarillo you just must visit the Cadillac Ranch, where 10 Cadillacs have been half-buried as a monument to Route 66.

Midpoint Café in Adrian, is what the name suggests, half way between Chicago and Los Angeles, that must be worth a photo stop.

As you cross the border to New Mexico turn your watches back an hour.

You will drive through old hunting grounds on your way to Tucumcari.

Hotel - Super 8.

Day 10 Tucumcari - Santa Fe (161 miles).

The drive today will take you to Santa Fe, which is the oldest state capital in the US. A great city with loads to offer.

Hotel - Courtyard by Marriott.

Day 12 Santa Fe - Holbrook (276 miles).

Driving through Arizona.

Leaving Santa Fe the route heads through Albuquerque and onto the state of Arizona. As you continue to Holbrook you will see old cafes and motels that still line the old Route 66, sadly some have seen better days.

Hotel - Best Western Arizonian.

Day 13 Holbrook - Grand Canyon (171 miles).

An historic sign.

Today you head over to see one of the most amazing sites in the world, The Grand Canyon, but before you get there don’t forget to stop at Meteor Crater, at nearly 1 mile across and 550 feet deep this, dare we say hole, was created by an asteroid hitting the earth whilst it was moving at 26000 mph. But don’t worry it did happen over 50000 years ago.

Another great stop for today is Flagstaff, a town rich is route 66 and Native American history.

Hotel - Best Western Premier Squire Inn.

Day 14: Grand Canyon.

Look before you leap, “The Grand Canyon”.

The outstanding, mind blowing Grand Canyon will leave you dumb struck as you gaze at it’s sheer size. Along the rim of the canyon there are loads of viewing points, or better still take a walk down the canyon, but beware going down is easy, but the return is all uphill. Trust us on that one, we’ve done it!!

Hotel - Best Western Premier Squire Inn.

Day 15 Grand Canyon - Las Vegas (277 miles).

With all the excitement that’s to come, we must not forget that this leg of the trip has the longest remaining segments of the old Route 66.

Drive through the desert in to Nevada to reach the entertainment capital of the world.

For those that have been , they will know the beauty of this city, for those that have yet to experience the views of the mega structures that line “The Strip”.

Las Vegas is a city that never sleeps which is great as there is so much to see and do.

We have chosen an iconic hotel for you to stay in “The Luxor, with it’s pyramid lobby and casino and talking camels, we know you will just love it.

Hotel - The Luxor.

Day 16 Las Vegas.

The sign says it all.

A whole day to explore the wonderful city of Vegas.

Many companies say take time to relax by the pool, we say head out, hit the town hard. Take in Monte Carlo, New York, Paris and Venice. See the tigers at the Mirage or the pirates at TI. The shops at Caesars with it’s for ever changing ceilings. The world famous fountains at Bellagio. in the list of top 15 largest hotels in the world, Las Vegas hosts 10 of them.

It’s a world with out clocks or any natural light in the casino areas and the carpets tell more of a tale than just a colour. As night falls over the neon city, head to old Las Vegas and the Freemont Street Experience, a light show to end all light shows. With incredible West-End style shows, TV studios, theme and water parks you will be in for an incredible time, and we haven’t even mentioned the food.

Hotel - The Luxor.

Day 17 Las Vegas - Santa Monica (286 miles).

Today, and your final major drive takes you through the Mojave Desert. Take a stop just before you cross the border in to California and see the car that was used by Bonnie and Clyde. As you cross the San Bernardino Mountains you will see the city of Los Angeles before you.

Route 66 becomes Santa Monica Boulevard and will lead you through Hollywood, Beverly Hills and all the way to the ocean at Santa Monica Pier.

Santa Monica Pier.

If you like your days to be slightly less serious and a whole heap more fun, then head over to Anaheim and the home of Mickey and Donald at the original Disneyland park.
